Chapter 1: The Dog Knew First
Mason had finally returned home from military service.
He called out for his wife and daughter.
No one answered.
Then Scout, the family's Golden Retriever, rushed toward him, gently grabbed his uniform pant leg, and pulled him toward the backyard.
Mason followed.
And froze.
His wife and daughter were locked inside a dog kennel.
Bruises and red marks were still visible across their cheeks and arms.
But what made Mason even angrier—
was seeing his own brother and sister-in-law standing outside.
Brent still had a thin rattan cane in his hand.
He glanced at Mason's family and mocked them:
"Still want to tell on us?"
Mason looked at the cane.
Then at the marks on his wife and daughter.
He dropped his military bag.
"YOU BASTARD!"
Emma instantly recognized the voice.
She looked up and screamed:
"DAD!"
The smiles disappeared from Brent and Nicole's faces.
They didn't run.
But they both understood the same thing—
Mason had seen everything.
Standing in front of the kennel, he asked coldly:
"Who touched my family?"
Why had Brent and Nicole locked them outside?
What were they trying to stop Lily from revealing?
And what will Mason do when he learns the truth about what happened while he was away?
