Chapter 2: What the Phone Revealed

His hands were shaking.
"Where did you get this?" he whispered.
"Does it matter?" I said.
"The question is why you hid it from me."
My daughter was still pressed against my side, sniffling.
I smoothed her hair and kept my eyes on him.
His mother stepped closer.
"This is not the time or place—"
"You don't get to decide that anymore," I said quietly.
That stopped her.
My husband looked down at the folder again.
I watched something cross his face — not guilt, not exactly.
Something closer to fear.
"It's not what you think," he said.
"Then explain it to me.
Right now.
In front of everyone."
He glanced around the room.
The guests had gone still.
His sister stood frozen near the cake table, her new husband's hand on her arm.
"Lower your voice," my husband said through his teeth.
"I've been lowering my voice for four years," I said.
"I'm done."
That was when his phone buzzed on the table beside us.
He moved to grab it.
I got there first.
I looked at the screen.
And everything I thought I understood about our marriage collapsed in a single second.
