Chapter 2: Something They've Been Hiding

Robert wiped cake from his face and slowly got to his feet.

The garden was still completely silent.

Then he laughed.

"Paying for the party?" He looked around at the guests.

"You hear this?

He thinks that makes him someone."

Helen stepped forward.

"You should leave.

Right now.

Before you embarrass yourself further."

"Embarrass myself?" I looked at my children.

Rebecca was still holding the plate.

Jacob had his arms wrapped around his own waist.

Samuel hadn't moved.

I turned back to my parents.

"I have been sending money to this house every single month for six years.

Six years.

And you put my children to work like servants at your party."

My mother's expression didn't change.

That was what hit me hardest.

Not Robert.

Not the guests still holding their phones up.

My mother's face — completely still, completely unbothered.

Then my phone buzzed.

I looked down.

It was a message from my sister.

One I hadn't expected.

*"Don't say anything else.

Not yet.

I have something you need to see first.

Something they've been hiding from you for a long time."*

My hand tightened around the phone.

Robert was still talking.

The guests were still watching.

But none of that mattered anymore.

Because whatever my sister knew — it was bigger than today.
