Chapter 1: The Children Who Were Made to Serve

I stepped into my parents' garden and froze.
Rebecca was crying while carrying a stack of dirty plates.
Samuel's arms trembled beneath a tray of glasses.
Four-year-old Jacob was wiping food stains from a table while my cousins stood nearby filming them and laughing.
"Dad…" Rebecca's voice cracked.
"Grandma said we have to serve everybody."
I rushed forward.
Samuel looked at me through tears.
"Grandpa said we are allowed to eat the guests' leftovers."
I took the tray from him, pulled the rag from Jacob's hand, and gathered all three children against me.
Robert came striding across the lawn.
"Those filthy children should consider themselves lucky to serve this family!"
Helen nodded beside the birthday cake.
Something inside me snapped.
I crossed the distance and punched Robert squarely in the face.
He crashed backward into the cake.
The garden went silent.
I stared down at him.
"Do you really not know who's paying for this party?"
And for the first time all afternoon, my father looked afraid.
