Chapter 2: The Folder at the Door

Part 2 — continued in comments ⬇️
We made it to the car before my hands started shaking.
Evan was quiet the whole way home.
No crying.
No questions.
Just his small hand in mine, and a red mark still visible on his cheek.
That silence was worse than anything Diane could have said to me.
When we got inside, I sat him down and asked if he was okay.
He looked up at me and said, "Mom, why doesn't Grandma Diane like us?"
I didn't have an answer.
That night, my phone wouldn't stop.
Fourteen messages from Bennett family members.
Most of them called me unstable.
Two of them said I should apologize to Diane before the weekend was over.
Then one message came in from a number I didn't recognize.
*"You don't know what Diane has been telling the family about you and Evan for the past two years.
Call me.
There's something you need to see."*
I stared at the screen.
I didn't know who sent it.
But before I could decide what to do, my front door knocked.
I looked through the window.
It was Diane's sister — someone I had never once seen at a single family gathering.
She was holding a folder.
---
What was inside that folder — and what had Diane been saying about Evan behind closed doors?
