Chapter 1: The Chicken and the Slap

Just before Evan could take a roasted chicken thigh, Diane snatched the plate from his reach.

Then she sl\*pped my four-year-old son across the face.

He fell next to the picnic table while half the Bennett family laughed at him.

"Resorting to stealing from my table now?" Diane sneered.

Evan turned toward me through his tears.

"Mom, I'm so hungry!"

I took his hand and began walking toward the gate.

Diane followed us from behind, the plate still in her hands.

"Don't embarrass me over one little joke!"

I stopped.

Turned to face her.

And sl\*pped her.

Diane crashed onto the patio as chicken scattered around her.

My anger went further than it should have.

I picked up a fallen piece and pressed it against her mouth while she struggled.

Then I stood, took Evan's hand again, and walked away.

At the gate, I turned my head back.

"Enjoy it.

That's the last piece of meat you'll ever eat in your life."

What did Diane do after this?
