Chapter 2: The Name On The Whiteboard

Part 2 ⬇️
My hands went cold.
The cake felt heavy.
The balloons suddenly felt ridiculous.
"Know what?" I asked.
Captain Reyes looked back at the other guys.
None of them moved.
"Tyler hasn't been here," he said carefully.
"Not today.
He called in this morning and said he had a family emergency."
The room tilted.
"That's not possible," I said.
"I'm his family."
Nobody answered that.
One of the younger guys — Marcus, I'd met him at the Christmas party — turned and walked toward the back.
Fast.
Like he didn't want to be standing there anymore.
I looked at Captain Reyes.
"Where is he?"
He opened his mouth.
Closed it.
Then said, "Amanda, maybe you should call him first."
I already had my phone out.
Tyler's line rang four times and went to voicemail.
That's when I noticed something on the whiteboard near the office door.
A name written in the shift schedule.
Tyler's name.
Crossed out.
And next to it, in someone's handwriting, a different address.
Not our home address.
I pointed at it.
"What is that?"
Captain Reyes stepped in front of the board.
Too slow.
I had already seen it.
