Chapter 2: The Woman Who Didn't Knock

I sat down on Aunt Diane's couch because my legs stopped working right.
Mia was still asleep.
Jaylen climbed up next to me and didn't say a word.
He was six.
He understood more than a six-year-old should.
I called my boyfriend.
Straight to voicemail.
I called again.
Same.
Then a text came through.
*"Already at the gate.
Where are you?"*
I stared at that message for a long time.
I typed back: *"I can't get the kids covered.
Aunt Diane left."*
Three dots appeared.
Then they stopped.
Then they disappeared.
No reply.
I looked around the living room — Aunt Diane's ceramic angels on the shelf, her bingo bag still sitting by the door.
She'd left in such a hurry she forgot it.
That's when Jaylen tugged my sleeve.
"Mama.
There's somebody at the door."
I looked up.
Through the glass panel I could see a shape.
A woman.
Standing very still.
Not knocking.
Just standing there like she'd been there a while and was deciding whether to knock at all.
I didn't recognize her.
But she was looking at my children like she knew exactly who they were.
---
What happens when she opens that door changes everything.
