Chapter 2: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Gone

Her name was Diane.

Adrian's face went completely white.

"That's not possible," he whispered.

"She's d*ad.

I watched her—" He stopped himself.

But not fast enough.

The federal agent stepped forward.

"Mr.

Hargrove.

We have a warrant."

Celeste shot to her feet.

"This is a private ceremony.

You have no right—"

"Sit down, Mrs.

Hargrove," my attorney said calmly.

"Or I'll add obstruction to the list."

Diane walked slowly up the aisle.

She wasn't fragile.

She wasn't broken.

She was carrying a manila envelope, and her eyes never left Adrian.

"You told everyone I drove off that bridge," she said.

"You told my children I chose to leave them."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"You're confused.

You were never stable—"

"I have eleven years of bank records that say otherwise." She placed the envelope in the federal agent's hands.

"And a property deed signed the day after my supposed accident.

Signed by you.

Transferring everything I owned into a shell company."

The church was completely silent.

Four hundred people.

Not one sound.

I looked at Celeste.

Her face had gone from fury to something else entirely.

Fear.

Because she recognized that envelope.

She had signed one just like it.
