Chapter 1: The Secret She Was Never Supposed to Tell

At my wedding reception, my new husband's little daughter tugged on my dress and asked, "Can I tell you Daddy's secret now that you're my mommy?" — but what she said next made my stomach drop.

When I met my husband, Graham, three years ago, I quickly learned that his six-year-old daughter, Millie, was the most important person in his life.

Millie's mother had d*ed giving birth to her, leaving Graham to grieve while raising a newborn alone.

It took him years to recover, and as Millie grew older, she started feeling the absence of a mother more and more.

I never tried to replace the mom she'd lost, but over time, Millie and I became incredibly close.

We baked together, had movie nights, and she eventually started asking when I'd finally become part of their family "for real."

So when Graham proposed, Millie was thrilled.

"Does this mean you're really going to be my family now?" she asked excitedly.

"It does," I said, pulling her into a hug.

Our wedding day was everything I'd hoped for.

We had a small ceremony surrounded by family and friends, and Millie proudly walked down the aisle before me carrying flowers.

At the reception, Graham was across the room talking to relatives when I suddenly felt someone tug on my dress.

It was Millie.

"Can I tell you Daddy's secret now that you're my mommy?" she whispered.

I smiled, expecting some silly little secret.

"What secret?"

Millie glanced toward Graham and lowered her voice.

"Daddy made me promise to never, ever, ever tell you."

My smile faded.

"Then why are you telling me now?"

She looked genuinely confused.

"Because you're my mommy now.

I thought that meant I could."

I crouched down beside her and asked what she meant.

Then she leaned closer and whispered something in my ear.

I slowly looked across the room at Graham, suddenly seeing the man I'd married less than three hours earlier in a completely different light.

What did little Millie whisper — and what does Graham's secret mean for this marriage?
