Chapter 1: The Girl With the White Purse

At my sister's wedding, she humiliated me in front of three hundred guests for being broke, divorced, and arriving with my eight-year-old daughter.
Then my mother laughed and said, **"Put Claire in the back.
She'll ruin the photos."**
They thought I had stepped into that mansion with nothing.
They had no idea my daughter was carrying something in her tiny white purse that could destroy the marriage **before the wedding cake was even cut.**
My younger sister Vanessa had chosen Rosewood Estate, a sprawling oceanfront mansion outside Newport, because, as she proudly told everyone online, "Ordinary hotels are for ordinary brides."
And Vanessa had never considered herself ordinary.
White Bentleys lined the circular driveway.
Thousands of ivory roses climbed marble columns.
Crystal chandeliers glittered above three hundred guests dressed in designer gowns and black tuxedos.
Then Vanessa descended the grand staircase in a hand-beaded lace gown that probably cost more than my car.
I almost hadn't come.
I was thirty-two, divorced, and raising my eight-year-old daughter, Lily, on a teacher's salary.
My navy dress wasn't designer.
Lily wore a yellow cardigan over her little cream dress and held my hand tightly as we entered the ballroom.
Vanessa spotted us immediately.
Her smile sharpened.
"She actually came alone," she announced loudly to her bridesmaids.
Her eyes dropped to Lily.
"No husband.
No money.
Just her little shadow."
A few women laughed awkwardly.
My mother, Patricia, stood beside Vanessa in silver silk and pearls.
She could have stopped her.
Instead, she laughed too.
"Claire, sit near the kitchen.
We don't need your situation showing up in the family pictures."
Lily's fingers tightened around mine.
That hurt more than anything Vanessa had said.
"We're staying for dinner," I whispered to Lily.
"We'll congratulate Graham, then we'll go home."
She nodded.
But she kept staring at Vanessa.
What nobody knew was that three nights earlier, Lily had accidentally recorded something inside my apartment.
Something involving Vanessa.
And my ex-husband.
I had watched the video only once and copied it onto my laptop because I didn't know what to do with it.
I thought the flash drive was still inside my desk drawer.
**I was wrong.**
During dinner, my mother gave a speech about "loyalty, honesty, and putting family above everything."
I nearly choked on the irony.
Then a waiter approached our table carrying only one plate.
"I'm very sorry, ma'am," he whispered.
"There isn't a meal listed for your daughter."
I stared at him.
"What?"
"The bride reduced the children's count this afternoon."
Lily lowered her eyes.
Without hesitation, I pushed my plate toward her.
Across the ballroom, Vanessa watched.
Then she lifted her champagne glass.
"Some people should learn not to bring extra mouths when they weren't invited."
Several guests stopped eating.
Graham stared at her.
"Vanessa."
"What?" she said innocently.
"I'm joking."
My mother gave me the familiar warning look.
**Don't make trouble.**
So I didn't.
Vanessa wanted me angry.
She wanted me crying.
She wanted another story about her jealous, divorced sister ruining her perfect wedding.
I refused to give her one.
Then Lily slipped her hand from mine.
"Sweetheart?"
She reached into her little white purse.
My heart stopped.
A black flash drive rested in her palm.
"Lily…"
She was already walking toward the DJ booth.
Guests began turning.
"Lily!"
Before I could reach her, she climbed onto the small platform, placed the flash drive beside the DJ's laptop, and picked up the microphone with both hands.
Her voice trembled.
"My mom doesn't know I brought this."
The ballroom went silent.
Vanessa slowly lowered her champagne glass.
"But Mr.
Graham needs to see the video before he stays married to Aunt Vanessa."
Three hundred people seemed to stop breathing.
Vanessa shot to her feet.
"TURN THAT MICROPHONE OFF!"
Graham stared at his new wife.
"What video?"
Vanessa laughed too quickly.
"She's eight, Graham.
It's some stupid children's thing."
Then she screamed toward security.
"Remove them!"
Two guards moved toward Lily.
I stepped between them and my daughter.
Before either man could touch us, Graham's voice thundered across the ballroom.
**"Nobody touches that child."**
Vanessa froze.
For the first time all night, fear replaced the confidence on her face.
Graham looked toward the DJ.
"Play it."
The flash drive slid into the laptop.
The enormous LED screen behind the sweetheart table went dark.
Then a video appeared.
Timestamped three nights earlier.
My apartment kitchen filled the screen.
Vanessa stood beside my counter wearing her engagement ring.
A man entered from the hallway, stepped behind her, and wrapped both arms around her waist.
Then he turned toward the camera.
**My ex-husband.**
A collective gasp swept through the ballroom.
Vanessa lunged toward the laptop.
"TURN IT OFF!"
The best man caught her.
Phones appeared everywhere.
Guests were recording.
Vanessa's perfect wedding livestream was still broadcasting.
Graham slowly removed his wedding ring.
But then the recording continued.
My ex-husband stepped away from Vanessa.
And Vanessa said:
"Once Graham signs the papers after the wedding, Claire will never know what we did with—"
"STOP THE VIDEO!" Vanessa screamed.
Graham's eyes snapped toward her.
So did mine.
Because suddenly I understood.
**The affair wasn't the real secret.**
They had done something to me.
Something involving documents I had signed during my divorce.
Then the next frame appeared.
My ex-husband was holding a document.
And even from across the ballroom, I recognized the signature at the bottom.
**Mine.**
My mother covered her mouth and began crying.
Graham stepped toward the screen.
Vanessa broke free and ran desperately toward the laptop.
And just before the recording revealed exactly what my sister and my ex-husband had secretly taken from me—
