Chapter 2: Something I Should Have Told You Forty Years Ago

Part 2 — continued in comments ⬇️

No one moved.

My sister's hands were shaking.

"Eleanor." I stepped toward her.

"What is it?

What do you see?"

She couldn't speak.

She just kept staring at Ryan's back.

Ryan turned around slowly.

"Ma'am — do you know something about this scar?"

My sister finally looked up at him.

Her eyes were wet.

"Where were you born?"

Ryan blinked.

"What?"

"Please.

Where were you born?"

"I...

St.

Catherine's Hospital.

Why?"

My sister made a sound I'd never heard from her before.

Something between a gasp and a sob.

Jessica grabbed her arm.

"Aunt Eleanor, you're scaring everyone.

What is going on?"

But Eleanor wasn't looking at Jessica.

She was looking at me.

"I need to tell you something." Her voice dropped to almost nothing.

"Something I should have told you forty years ago."

The whole patio had gone completely still.

Twenty people.

Not one of them breathing.

I felt cold despite the summer heat.

"Eleanor—"

"You had a baby," she whispered.

"Before Jessica.

Before any of them."

My heart stopped.

"And I was the one who took him away."
