Chapter 1: The Scar She Was Told to Hide

At 68, my daughter told me to cover my body at a family pool party — then her husband took off his shirt and everyone went silent.

At sixty-eight, I'd finally stopped being ashamed of my body.

So when my daughter invited the whole family to her backyard pool party, I bought myself a bright blue swimsuit.

The moment I took off my cover-up, Jessica stared at me.

"Mom...

seriously?"

"What?"

She lowered her voice.

"Could you please cover yourself?

There are twenty people here."

My face burned.

I'd raised three children.

I had wrinkles, loose skin, and a long scar across my stomach from surgery years earlier.

But hearing my own daughter say it still hurt.

I reached for my cover-up.

That's when her husband, Ryan, stood up.

"No."

Jessica frowned.

"What?"

"If she has to cover up, then so do I."

Before anyone could react, Ryan pulled off his T-shirt.

The entire patio went silent.

Across his stomach was a long scar.

Almost identical to mine.

Same side.

Same unusual curved shape.

My glass nearly slipped from my hand.

Ryan and I had never spoken about our surgeries.

Jessica glanced between us.

"Why do you both have the same scar?"

Ryan looked just as confused as I felt.

Then my 82-year-old sister, who'd been seated beside the pool, suddenly stood up.

She walked toward Ryan and stared at his scar.

"Turn around."

"What?"

"Please."

Ryan slowly turned.

And my sister covered her mouth.

---

That scar.

That silence.

That look on my sister's face.
