Chapter 2: The Name Nobody Expected

He walked straight toward me.
Not toward her.
Toward me.
"Mom, I got here as fast as I could.
Is the machine giving you trouble again?"
The woman behind him made a sound I'll never forget.
Something between a gasp and a cough.
I looked at my son — my extremely successful son, the one she'd spent twenty minutes bragging about — and I said calmly, "I managed, sweetheart.
Though it's been quite an evening."
He frowned and looked at the cart holding my damp clothes.
Then he looked at her.
"Why is my mother's laundry on that cart?"
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
"I asked you a question."
"I — we just had a small misunderstanding—"
"She threw my things out of the dryer," I said quietly.
"Told me I had nothing waiting for me except daytime television."
The color drained from her face completely.
My son turned to face her.
His voice dropped to something very quiet and very controlled.
"I've been looking forward to tonight for two weeks.
I made a reservation.
I brought flowers." He paused.
"And you treated my mother like she was in your way."
She reached for his arm.
"Please, just let me explain—"
He stepped back.
That was when her phone buzzed on the floor where she'd dropped it.
She glanced down.
So did I.
The name on the screen stopped us both cold.

What that name revealed changed everything — and she never saw it coming.
