Chapter 1: The Woman Who Thought She Had All the Time in the World

An entitled woman threw my wet laundry out of the only free dryer because I was "old and could wait"—she had no idea karma was already on its way.

At seventy-five, I thought I'd encountered every kind of rude person imaginable.

Then my dryer broke.

The laundromat was packed that Saturday, and after both my washing machines finished, I finally spotted the only available dryer.

I loaded my first basket, then walked across the room for the second.

I was gone maybe thirty seconds.

When I turned around, a woman was pulling my wet clothes OUT.

"Excuse me!

What are you doing?"

"Taking the dryer."

"You watched me load it!"

She shrugged and pulled a red dress from a garment bag.

"Then you shouldn't have walked away."

I stared at my clean clothes dumped onto a dirty plastic cart.

"Those were clean."

"Oh, please.

Wash them again."

When I told her she'd have to wait like everyone else, she looked me up and down and laughed.

"You're seventy-something.

Where exactly are you rushing off to?"

My face burned.

"I'm meeting someone tonight," she said, carefully placing her dress inside.

"An extremely successful man.

This date could change my whole life, and I need this dress dry."

Then she pointed at my laundry.

"You probably have nothing waiting for you except daytime television.

So yes—you can wait."

As I gathered a blouse that had fallen onto the floor, she added loudly,

"Some old women just can't accept that nobody cares about their schedule anymore."

I bit my tongue.

She spent the next few minutes checking her dress, fixing her lipstick, and boasting about the man she was meeting.

"Two hours until my date.

Finally, a man worth dressing up for."

Then the laundromat door opened.

I barely glanced up.

She did.

Her phone slipped from her hand.

"Oh my God...

what is HE doing here?"

She stared at the man who'd just stepped inside, then looked strangely at me.

Once.

Twice.

Her face went white.

Suddenly, she rushed over and lowered her voice.

"I'll give you a hundred dollars.

Just PLEASE don't tell him what happened here."

But here I realized that karma was already in action.

Because there was ONE TINY DETAIL about the man she'd been so desperate to impress that she had absolutely no idea about.

What is that one detail — and what happens when she finds out?
