Chapter 2: My Name on His Documents
I stood near the front desk as two federal agents crossed the lobby.
Nicole’s face went pale, but Aaron grabbed her arm and tried to turn back toward the doors.
“Mr.
Carter,” one agent called.
“We need to speak with you about the charity travel fund.”
Nicole pulled free.
“This is Paige’s doing.
She’s angry because we came without her.”
“Without me?” I said.
“You used my canceled reservation to get inside.”
Aaron glared at me.
“You have no idea what you’ve started.”
The second agent placed a folder on the desk.
Inside were transfer records bearing my name and an account number I had never seen.
My hands began to shake.
“Why is my name on those documents?”
Nicole looked at Aaron.
“You said the money came from private donors.”
“It did,” he snapped.
Then the agent turned one page and pointed to a signature.
“Ms.
Paige, this account was opened while you were receiving treatment.
Someone used copies of your medical and financial records.”
Nicole’s anger vanished.
Aaron stepped backward, but Dad suddenly emerged from the elevator holding Aaron’s laptop.
“I found what you hid,” Dad said.
Aaron froze when Dad opened the screen.
