Chapter 1: The Vacation I Paid For

"After I survived cancer, I paid $37,000 for a family vacation, only for my sister to tell me I wasn’t allowed to come unless I spent the trip acting as her personal assistant.

I quietly canceled every ticket.

Then, FBI agents were already waiting at the resort lobby...

My sister told me I was not welcome on the family vacation I had paid for unless I agreed to spend the entire week working as her personal assistant.

She said it in front of everyone at my mother’s kitchen island, with a resort brochure laid beside a cake decorated with the words, **You beat cancer.**

Nicole drummed her manicured nails against the counter as though what she was suggesting was perfectly reasonable.

“Honestly, Paige, you know these trips are stressful.

If you come, I need you helping with schedules, luggage, kids, dinner reservations, everything.

Otherwise, maybe it’s better you stay home and rest.”

Rest was the word people had started using whenever they wanted to make weakness sound considerate.

Six months earlier, I had finished my final round of treatment, and although my hair was growing back unevenly and my body still tired faster than my pride wanted to admit, I was alive.

That was exactly why I had planned the trip.

My parents had dreamed of Hawaii for years, and I wanted one precious family memory in which nobody looked at me as though cancer were still the most important thing about me.

I reserved a luxury resort, flights, suites, meals, and activities for everyone.

By the time everything was paid, the total reached thirty-seven thousand dollars, and every cent had come from me.

Yet Nicole was staring at me as though I were hired help.

Mom gave me the uneasy smile she always used when she wanted me to accept something unfair without creating tension.

“Your sister has three children, honey.

You know how hard travel is for her.”

Aaron, Nicole’s husband, never even looked up from his phone.

Dad rubbed his forehead and stayed silent, and that silence told me they had already planned this arrangement before I arrived.

I looked directly at Nicole.

“So the vacation I paid for is only mine if I spend it working for you?”

She laughed as though I were being ridiculous.

“Don’t be dramatic.

You’re single.

You don’t have kids.

You have time.”

Her words brought back moments I had spent months trying to leave behind.

I remembered paying hospital bills alone, dealing with insurance forms by myself, and the nights I became so sick from treatment that there was nobody beside me to help.

I also remembered sitting alone in the parking lot after my doctor told me I was in remission.

I had cried because I survived, then stayed there until I felt strong enough to drive myself home.

But there was something else Nicole did not know.

Inside my purse was an envelope from my attorney.

And it concerned Aaron.

I smiled.

“Okay.”

Nicole blinked.

“Okay?”

“Yes.

You’re right.

I should stay home.”

The pleased expression on her face made what I did next much easier.

I stepped outside, called the travel concierge, confirmed the cancellation protections attached to the reservation, and removed every guest except myself.

Then I canceled the family’s flights.

All of them.

After that, I opened the document my attorney had sent me and forwarded it to the federal investigators who had spent the prior three weeks asking questions about Aaron’s so-called charity travel fund.

By the following morning, Nicole was screaming into my voicemail.

She apparently believed thirty-seven thousand dollars of my money still belonged to the family even after they had decided I was only useful if I worked for them.

By Friday, however, Nicole somehow made it to the resort lobby anyway.

And she was not the only surprising arrival.

The FBI was there too..."
