Chapter 2: Something He Never Told You

I drove home with $640 worth of clarity.
Derek thought I'd accepted it.
He thought I'd swallowed my pride and moved on.
He had no idea I'd been keeping records.
Every meal I cooked.
Every load of laundry.
Every 2 a.m.
feeding so Casey could sleep.
Every grocery run.
Every hour on my hands and knees scrubbing his bathroom floor.
I sat at my kitchen table that night and wrote it all down.
Two weeks.
Fourteen days.
And I had documented every single one.
Then I picked up the phone and called Casey.
She answered on the second ring, voice low.
The baby was sleeping.
"Mom?
You okay?
Did you get home safe?"
"I'm fine, sweetheart.
I just have a question.
Did you know Derek gave me a bill this morning?"
Silence.
"A...
what?"
"$640.
For food, utilities, and the guest room."
More silence.
Then I heard her voice change.
"Mom.
He didn't."
"He did.
I paid it."
"You PAID it?"
"I did."
Another pause.
Then, very quietly: "Mom...
what are you going to do?"
I looked down at the paper in front of me.
Fourteen days of work.
Line by line.
"Don't worry about it, honey."
But Casey had gone quiet in a way that told me she already knew something I didn't.
"Mom," she said slowly.
"There's something Derek never told you.
About the house."
