Chapter 1: The Bill on the Kitchen Table

After I spent two weeks helping with my newborn grandchild, my son-in-law charged me $640 for staying in his house.

I paid him — and then taught him a lesson he'll never forget.

My name is Mary.

I'm 61, and when my daughter Casey had her first baby, I drove four hours to stay with them for two weeks.

Derek, my son-in-law, met me in the driveway before I'd even switched off the engine.

"Give me that," he said, grabbing my suitcase.

"You drove four hours.

You're not carrying anything."

That was Derek.

In the six years he'd been with Casey, he'd always been kind to me.

He remembered my birthday, called me "Mom" sometimes, and whenever I visited, he made me feel at home.

So when I stepped into their house and saw him exhausted, Casey barely holding herself together, and my tiny grandson asleep against her chest, I didn't need anyone to ask me to help.

The first few days were rough.

Casey was barely sleeping, and Derek had already gone back to work.

I cooked dinner, threw in laundry, cleaned whenever I could, and took some of the night feedings so Casey could rest.

One night, I found her crying softly in the kitchen.

"What's wrong, honey?"

She hugged me.

"Nothing.

I'm just so tired.

Mom...

I don't know what we'd do without you."

I held her for a moment.

"That's what moms are for."

And I meant it.

By the end of those two weeks, my back ached, and I was ready for my own bed.

But I'd do it all again.

On my last morning, Casey hugged me before taking the baby upstairs.

"Thank you for everything, Mom.

Seriously."

Then she laughed.

"Next time you visit, you're not doing a thing."

I watched her disappear upstairs with the baby.

A minute later, Derek walked into the kitchen and placed a piece of paper in front of me.

"What's this?"

"Your share."

I looked down.

Food — $310.

Utilities — $180.

Guest room — $150.

TOTAL: $640.

For a moment, I honestly thought it was a joke.

"You're charging me for staying here?"

Derek shrugged.

"We're not made of money, Mary.

Everybody pays their share."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

For two weeks, I'd cooked his dinners, washed his laundry, cleaned his house, and gotten up at night with his newborn son.

And apparently, I owed him money.

I opened my purse and counted out $640.

Derek looked surprised.

Then a small smile appeared on his face.

"Glad you understand."

I pushed the money toward him.

"Oh, I understand."

Then I picked up my suitcase and left without another word.

Derek had no idea what I'd just decided to do.

Less than 24 hours later, my son-in-law was on his knees in front of me, crying and begging me to forgive him.
