Chapter 2: The Folder on the Counter

Part 2 ⬇️

I didn't answer the door right away.

I stood in the hallway, coffee in hand, listening to him pound and shout.

The same man who had walked out twelve hours ago without a single look back was now desperate to get inside.

I finally opened the door.

Anthony's face was red, his shirt wrinkled, his eyes wild.

He looked nothing like the polished man who used to brag about his watch collection at dinner parties.

"You had no right," he said, pushing past me into the hallway.

"No right at all."

"No right to do what, Anthony?"

He spun around and held up his phone.

His hands were shaking.

"The joint account.

The car.

The credit cards.

Everything is gone.

You cancelled all of it."

I took a slow sip of my coffee.

"Yes.

I did."

"We're married.

That's my money too."

I looked at him for a long moment.

"Actually," I said quietly, "it never was."

His face went still.

I walked to the kitchen counter and picked up a folder I had prepared the night before.

I held it out to him.

He didn't take it.

He just stared at it like it might burn him.

"What is that?" he asked.

"Everything you should have read before you married me," I said.

"Including the prenuptial agreement you signed nine years ago.

The one your own lawyer reviewed."

The color drained from his face.

And that was when my phone rang.

I glanced at the screen and felt my stomach tighten.

It was my attorney.
