Chapter 1: The Night He Showed Me Who He Was
After I lost my business, my husband packed his bags, telling me, "I didn't sign up for a broke wife" – the next morning, he was furiously pounding on my locked door, demanding, "How could you do this to me?!"
When Anthony and I first met, he was struggling to find his path in life.
I believed in him completely.
For years, I was his biggest cheerleader, emotionally and financially supporting us while he bounced between failed passion projects.
I even quietly paid off his mounting credit card debts without a single complaint.
I worked exhausting 80-hour weeks to build my marketing firm from the ground up, always making sure he felt entirely secure, encouraged, and loved.
As my business took off, it funded a beautiful luxury lifestyle for us both.
He happily played the role of the wealthy partner, bragging to his friends about his expensive watch collection and our lavish vacations.
I never minded the spending, because I truly thought we had a fiercely loyal marriage built on mutual support.
But last night, I sat Anthony down in our living room with tears in my eyes and delivered devastating news.
I told him my company had completely collapsed overnight.
The accounts were frozen, and we were entirely bankrupt.
Instead of comforting the woman who had stood by his side through absolutely everything, he turned completely cold.
He didn't even hesitate.
Within an hour, he was rapidly packing his designer suitcases – the ones I had bought him for our anniversary.
"I didn't sign up for a broke wife," he sneered, stepping out the front door and leaving me alone in the dark.
I sat in the silent living room, listening to his car speed away.
Then, I calmly wiped my tears, smiled, and poured myself a glass of wine.
I didn't panic, and I certainly didn't cry myself to sleep.
That evening, I simply did what I should have done a long time ago.
