Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen
Finn stood there, staring.
Propped against the wall was a large framed portrait — his own AI-generated image.
Except in this version, he was completely bald, with a visible belly and deep lines across his face.
Underneath, in neat printed letters, it read: *"Motivation.
I'm waiting for you to look like this again."*
He turned to me slowly.
"What is this?"
"It's a gift," I said.
"Thoughtful, right?"
His jaw tightened.
"That's not funny."
"Neither was mine."
For a moment he just stood there, and I watched something shift behind his eyes — not quite guilt, but something close to it.
Then he said the thing that changed everything.
"You know what?
Maybe we both need to be honest about what we want from this marriage."
The room went very quiet.
I looked at him.
"What does that mean, Finn?"
He didn't answer right away.
He pulled out his phone, looked at the screen, and set it face-down on the table.
That small movement sent a chill through me.
Because I'd seen him do that before — always when a certain name came up.
I reached over and turned the phone face-up before he could stop me.
And what I saw on that screen made my hands go cold.
