Chapter 4: The Name I Didn't Know

He came back in from the garage with the cooler handle still in his hand.
I held the phone out to him.
He read it standing up.
His expression didn't change much — Daniel has never been a man who shows alarm quickly — but his jaw tightened, and he set the cooler down slowly, the way you set something down when you need both hands free.
"Who is Brooke?" he asked.
"I don't know."
"Who sent you this?"
"I don't know that either."
He read it again.
I watched his eyes move across the screen.
The screenshot showed a conversation between Chloe and this Brooke from three weeks ago.
Chloe had written: *She's perfect for this.
She loves to feel needed.
I just have to make her feel like we're close again and she'll do anything.
Last time I needed a favor she drove four hours in the rain.
Four hours, Brooke.*
Brooke had replied: *You're terrible lol.*
Chloe: *I'm practical.
There's a difference.
She'll cook everything, she won't ask to be paid, and she'll feel good about herself the whole time.
It's honestly a gift to her.*
Brooke: *What if she finds out she's not invited?*
Chloe: *She won't find out until after.
And by then the food will already be there.
What's she going to do, take it back?*
Daniel put the phone on the table face-up between us.
"This was planned," he said.
"From the beginning."
"From before she even called me."
He pulled out a chair and sat.
"Who sent this to you?"
"The number isn't saved.
No name."
"Could be Rachel."
"Rachel would have used her own number."
He nodded slowly.
"Someone else was watching this."
I picked up the phone and typed back to the unknown number: *Who are you?*
Three dots appeared.
Then stopped.
Then appeared again.
The reply came: *Someone who was at that planning meeting three weeks ago and didn't say anything when I should have.
I'm sorry.
I thought it was just Chloe being Chloe.
I didn't realize how much work you were actually doing.*
I showed Daniel.
"There was a planning meeting," I said.
"Multiple people knew."
"Before she ever sent you that voice memo."
I set the phone down.
Outside, a car passed slowly on the street.
The kitchen felt very quiet.
"She called me an angel," I said.
"She recorded herself calling me an angel and sent it to me so I'd feel chosen.
And she had already planned the whole thing."
Daniel didn't say anything.
"She knew exactly what she was doing.
She knew what kind of person I am.
She used it."
"Yes," he said.
"She did."
I stood up and started wrapping the trays more carefully for transport.
My hands needed something to do.
"I want to know who else was at that meeting," I said.
"Ashley—"
"I'm not going to do anything.
I just want to know."
I typed back to the unknown number: *Was Paige at that meeting?*
The reply came fast: *Yes.
So was Kayla.*
I stopped wrapping.
So the group chat outrage — Paige calling me selfish, Kayla telling me to be mature, Rachel's initial pile-on — none of it had been spontaneous.
They had known.
They had sat in a room together and watched Chloe plan this, and then when I pushed back, they had performed shock and disappointment on cue.
Rachel had broken from the script tonight.
But the others hadn't.
My phone buzzed again.
The group chat.
Paige: "Ashley, I think we all just need to calm down and talk about this tomorrow when emotions aren't so high."
Tomorrow.
When the shower was over.
When the food had already been served and photographed and posted.
When there was nothing left to undo.
I typed one sentence into the group chat and sent it before I could reconsider.
"I know about the planning meeting."
The three dots from Paige appeared and disappeared four times.
Chloe didn't respond at all.
But Kayla — quiet Kayla who had only sent one message all night — typed something, deleted it, and then went offline entirely.
Daniel watched me from across the kitchen.
"What are you going to do?" he said.
I looked at the trays.
Twelve of them.
Fifty people's worth of food made by someone who had believed, genuinely believed, that she was helping a frightened pregnant woman who didn't know how to ask for help.
"I'm going to take this food to Sister Mary," I said.
"And then I'm going to let Chloe explain to fifty people tomorrow morning why there's nothing on the tables."
Daniel was quiet for a moment.
"And the screenshot?"
I picked up my phone.
"I'm going to find out exactly who sent it," I said.
"Because I don't think they're finished talking."
The unknown number lit up again before I could type a single word.
May you like
*There's more.
Can I call you?*
