Chloe's voice came through the speaker like she was standing in my kitchen.
"She actually thinks we're friends." Laughter.
Then: "Ashley is so easy.
You just say the right things and she'll cook, clean, and carry everything herself.
I haven't spoken to her in three years."
More laughter.
Paige's voice this time.
"Does she know you didn't invite her because your new friends thought she'd look out of place?"
"She knows nothing," Chloe said.
"And she never will."
My husband didn't speak.
I couldn't either.

My husband stood up slowly.
