Adrian held both children against his chest and didn't move.
Lily was shaking.
Noah had stopped screaming, but his tiny hands were gripping Adrian's shirt like he was afraid to let go.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"You're overreacting," she said.
"They were fine."
Adrian looked up slowly.
"Fine?" His voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
"It was ten minutes, Adrian.
Stop making this into something it isn't."
He stood up.
He was still holding Noah.
"How long has this been happening?"
Vanessa didn't answer.
"Lily." He knelt down to her level.
"Has she done this before?"
Lily looked at Vanessa first.
Then back at her father.
She nodded.
Something inside Adrian went cold.
He walked past Vanessa without another word and carried both children inside.
He set them on the couch, found their blankets, and came back to the hallway.
That was when he noticed the door to his home office was open.
He never left it open.
He stepped inside — and stopped.
The drawer where he kept the children's documents was pulled out.
Something was missing.
