Chapter 3: The Accusation She Couldn't Answer

Every eye in the room moved to Clara.

Vanessa's phone was still raised.

Her hand wasn't shaking anymore.

"Six months ago," Vanessa said, her voice dropping to something almost gentle, which made it worse, "Clara went to see a lawyer.

Without telling Adrian.

Without telling anyone."

Adrian's head turned slowly toward Clara.

"Is that true?"

Clara didn't answer immediately.

That half-second of silence was enough.

"It's not what she's making it sound like," Clara said.

"Then what is it?" Adrian's voice was careful.

Controlled.

The way a person speaks when they are trying very hard not to break something.

"I was protecting us.

I was protecting you and Emma.

That's all it was."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"She was building a case.

Against this family.

Against you, Adrian.

I have the documents."

She turned the phone around.

There was a photograph of a legal envelope.

Clara's name was on the return address.

The law firm's name was visible at the top.

Olivia moved closer to read it.

"That's a family law firm."

"Family law," Vanessa repeated.

"As in divorce.

As in custody.

As in she was already planning to take Emma away from her own father six months ago."

Adrian looked at Clara.

"Why were you at a family law firm?"

"Because I was scared." Clara's voice finally cracked, just slightly.

"Because things were getting bad between us and I didn't know what else to do.

I went once.

I never filed anything.

I never signed anything."

"She's lying," Vanessa said flatly.

"I have a source inside that office who confirmed she requested a full custody evaluation."

Olivia turned sharply.

"A source inside a law office?

That's not even legal, Vanessa."

"Neither is planning to steal a man's child."

"No one was stealing anyone." Clara stepped forward now, her voice steadier.

"Adrian, look at me.

I went to one consultation.

I was frightened.

We had been fighting for months.

I sat in that office for forty minutes and I left and I never went back.

That is the truth."

Adrian's jaw was tight.

He was looking at her like he was trying to solve something.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I was ashamed.

Because I didn't go through with it.

Because I thought if I told you, you would think exactly what Vanessa wants you to think right now."

Vanessa's voice cut in smooth and fast.

"Or because you knew he'd leave you if he found out."

"Vanessa." Olivia's voice had an edge now.

"You just lied in front of everyone in this room twenty minutes ago.

You pushed that stroller.

We all watched it.

And now you're standing here presenting a blurry photograph as evidence of something?"

"The video was taken out of context."

"There is no context in which pushing a baby toward a staircase is acceptable."

Vanessa's expression flickered.

Just for a moment.

Then it reset.

"I want to talk to Adrian alone."

"That's not happening," Olivia said.

"I wasn't asking you."

Adrian hadn't moved.

He was still holding Emma, who had gone quiet against his shoulder, one small fist curled into his collar.

"Adrian." Vanessa's voice changed again.

Softer.

Private.

Like the two of them were the only people in the room.

"There is so much more I need to tell you.

About Clara.

About what she's been doing.

Things I've been watching for months because I was worried about Emma.

About you."

Clara went very still.

"What things?" Adrian said.

Vanessa looked at Clara.

The look lasted exactly long enough.

May you like

"Not here," Vanessa said.

"Not in front of her."
