Chapter 2: The Recording He Left Behind

My hands were shaking as I opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
Arthur's handwriting.
And beneath it, a document I didn't expect.
The lawyer, Mr.
Holt, sat quietly across from me.
"Arthur updated his will eight months ago," he said.
"His children don't know yet."
I looked up.
"What did he change?"
Mr.
Holt folded his hands.
"Everything."
Before he could explain, the door opened.
Arthur's eldest son, Richard, walked in.
His face went tight the moment he saw me.
"What is she doing here?" he said.
"This is a family matter."
"She is family," Mr.
Holt said calmly.
"She is Arthur's legal wife."
Richard's jaw tightened.
"She married him when he was sick and confused.
That marriage was a mistake and everyone knows it."
I didn't speak.
I held the letter against my chest.
"There's also a second document," Mr.
Holt said quietly.
"Arthur left a recorded message.
He made it two weeks before he p@ssed.
He wanted it played in this room, with everyone present."
Richard went still.
"What recording?" he said.
"No one told us about any recording."
Mr.
Holt reached into his briefcase and placed a small device on the table.
Then Arthur's voice filled the room.
And Richard's face turned white.
