Chapter 1: The Man Who Asked Me to Stay

A wealthy widower from a nursing home asked me to marry him so his family couldn't control his final days — after his funeral, his lawyer handed me an envelope and said, "Please, sit down.
The truth inside may be difficult to process."
I was seventy-eight when I met Arthur.
We lived in the same nursing home, but our lives there couldn't have been more different.
I lived in the state-funded wing, shared a small room, and survived on a modest pension.
Arthur was eighty-two and wealthy.
He lived in a private suite with his own nurses and far more comfort than most residents could imagine.
But we met in the courtyard over a game of chess, and none of that seemed to matter.
Soon, we were spending hours together.
We played chess beneath an old oak tree, drank tea, listened to jazz, and talked about everything from our happiest memories to our deepest regrets.
Arthur was a widower with three adult children.
Yet they rarely visited.
"They don't care about me," he once admitted.
"They're just waiting for me to die."
Then Arthur's health began to decline.
Suddenly, his children started appearing regularly.
They brought lawyers and began trying to take control of his medical decisions.
Arthur was terrified they'd eventually decide everything for him.
One afternoon, he took my hand.
"Marry me," he said.
"I want someone I trust beside me when the time comes."
I said yes.
For the next two years, we were husband and wife.
Arthur moved me into his suite, and for the first time in years, neither of us was lonely.
During his final months, we read together and watched sunsets from the balcony.
Last week, Arthur passed away peacefully while holding my hand.
His children barely acknowledged me at the funeral.
A week later, Arthur's lawyer came to see me.
He handed me a sealed envelope.
Then he looked at me carefully and said,
"Please, sit down.
The truth inside may be difficult to process."

What was inside that envelope?

And what will Arthur's children do when they find out?
