Chapter 2: The Phone Under the Table

Part 2 — continued from the comments ⬇️

My hands were trembling as I stared into that box.

It was a phone.

A small, cheap prepaid phone — the kind you buy when you don't want anyone to trace you.

Harold leaned in and said quietly, "It was wedged right under the table leg.

Pushed back against the wall.

Nobody would've seen it unless they were down on their hands and knees."

I turned it over.

The screen was cracked, but it still lit up.

There were text messages.

Dozens of them.

I only read three before my legs went weak.

The first one said: *"Did you leave it under the table like I told you?"*

The second one said: *"Make sure the old lady gets blamed.

Nobody will question it."*

The third one — sent just minutes before that girl walked back into the cafe — said: *"Perfect.

Now call Mom."*

I sat down on my front step and just stared at the screen.

This wasn't an accident.

This wasn't a forgotten bracelet.

Someone had planned this.

And whoever sent those messages knew exactly who I was.

Harold put his hand on my shoulder and said, "Susie, I don't think that girl acted alone."

That's when my phone rang.

It was the manager.

His voice was strange — tight, almost nervous — and he said just five words:

*"Susie.

Don't talk to anyone."*
