Chapter 1: The Day They Took Everything From Me

A wealthy teenage girl got me fired after claiming I st\*le her $2,000 diamond bracelet while I was serving her table — the next morning, one of my coworkers knocked on my door and said, "You need to see what I found under that table."
I'm 68, and I'm raising my three grandchildren on my own after my son and his wife p\*ssed away in a plane crash.
They're the only family I have left.
My tiny pension wasn't enough to support three young children, so I took a job as a waitress at a cafe.
I truly valued that job because it was the only thing helping me make ends meet.
My grandchildren would even stop by sometimes for a cup of their favorite cocoa.
A few days ago, a group of teenagers came into our cafe for lunch.
There's a prestigious private school near the cafe where I work.
Most of the students there come from wealthy families, and teachers and students often stop by our place for lunch or dinner.
I was assigned to serve their table.
The teenagers laughed loudly, spread their things all over the table, ordered several dishes, paid their bill, and left.
I immediately went over to clear their table.
Just a couple of minutes later, one of the girls from the group came rushing back inside.
She hurried over to the table where they'd been sitting, saw that it was already clean, and shouted across the cafe:
"Where is it?"
I walked over and asked:
"I'm sorry, what are you looking for?"
She frowned at me and replied:
"My bracelet.
My diamond bracelet.
Where is it?
I left it on the table because it kept catching on my sweater!
You st\*le it!"
My voice started shaking.
"I swear, I didn't see any bracelet..."
The manager rushed over and said they'd sort everything out.
He checked the security cameras.
There was a column near the table that partially blocked the camera's view, so you couldn't see the entire tabletop clearly.
But the footage did show me walking over to clear the table immediately after the teenagers left.
No one else came near it.
Everything made it look as though I'd gone straight to the table and taken her diamond bracelet along with the dirty dishes.
I swear to you, I didn't st\*al anything!
She started shouting that the bracelet was worth $2,000 and that she knew for a fact she'd left it on the table.
She even called her mother, who told the manager over the phone that she'd cause a huge scandal and tell everyone how terrible our cafe was.
Management was so worried about the cafe's reputation and the threats from the girl's wealthy family that they let me go on the spot.
I came home, hugged my grandchildren, and just cried.
I had no idea how we were supposed to survive until I could find another job.
Every single dollar mattered to me.
The next morning, someone knocked on my door.
It was Harold.
He was a sweet man who worked with us at the cafe as a janitor.
He handed me a small box and said:
"Susie, yesterday after you left, I was cleaning the cafe.
You won't believe what I found underneath that table.
You need to see this for yourself."
When I opened the box, I nearly fainted.
It wasn't the bracelet.
But it was something that made my bl\*\*d run cold.
