Chapter 2: That's What I Was Afraid Of

The officer didn't touch the case.
He stepped back, spoke quietly into his radio, and within seconds two more officers appeared — one carrying a bag, one with gloves already on.
I held Noah against me.
He was shaking.
"Grandma, did I do something wrong?"
"No, baby.
You did nothing wrong."
But my voice wasn't steady.
A woman nearby grabbed her children and ran.
Someone else started filming on their phone until an officer told them to stop.
Then the lead officer turned to me.
"Ma'am, we need to ask your grandson a few more questions.
Somewhere quiet."
We were taken to a small room off the lobby.
A detective was already waiting.
She sat across from Noah, calm and careful.
"Can you tell me exactly what the man said to you?
Every word."
Noah thought hard.
"He said his wife gave him the watch.
That it was special.
That he didn't want to make a scene looking for it himself."
The detective's pen stopped moving.
"Did he touch you at any point?"
"No.
He just…
walked with me.
Then he pointed.
Then he left fast."
She looked up at me.
"Has your grandson been near this pool before today?"
"Every day.
We've been here all week."
She wrote something down and underlined it twice.
"That's what I was afraid of."
