Chapter 1: The Man Who Needed Young Eyes

A stranger at the pool asked my grandson to help find his lost watch — 20 minutes later, police sealed off the pool area.

My ten-year-old grandson, Noah, had spent nearly every minute of our vacation in the hotel pool.

That afternoon, I was reading beside the water when an older man approached us.

He seemed harmless.

Polite, well-dressed, maybe in his sixties.

"Sorry to bother you," he said.

"I dropped my watch near the shallow end.

Young eyes are better than mine."

Noah immediately jumped up.

"I'll HELP!"

I watched them walk along the edge of the pool together.

A few minutes later, Noah returned alone.

"Did you find it?"

He nodded.

"Yeah.

He said thank you and left."

I thought nothing more of it.

Until twenty minutes later.

Two POLICE officers rushed through the hotel lobby.

Then four more appeared.

"EVERYONE OUT OF THE WATER!"

People froze.

Parents grabbed their children.

Within seconds, officers were stretching police tape around the entire pool area.

My stomach dropped.

I pulled Noah close.

"What happened?" I asked an officer.

He glanced at my grandson.

"Was this boy approached by an older man?"

"Yes..."

The officer immediately crouched beside him.

"What exactly did he ask you to find?"

"His watch."

"And where was it?"

Noah pointed toward a row of lounge chairs.

"Under there."

The officer's expression shifted.

"SHOW ME."

We followed him.

Noah stopped beside an empty chair.

But there was NO WATCH.

Instead, taped beneath the chair was a tiny black plastic case.

The officer shouted for everyone to STEP BACK.
