Chapter 1: The Woman by the Window
A rude woman on the plane took over half of my 86-year-old grandmother's seat because "people her age shouldn't even be traveling" — five minutes after takeoff, karma hit her in the last way she expected.
My grandma Rose had never seen the ocean.
So when I finally saved enough money, I surprised her with two tickets to Florida.
She cried when I told her.
"You mean I'm actually going to see the ocean?" she whispered.
It was supposed to be the happiest trip of our lives.
Unfortunately, our seats weren't together.
But the moment we reached her row, my excitement vanished.
The woman sitting by the window had raised the armrest and spread herself so far across the seats that Grandma barely had anywhere to sit.
"Excuse me," I said politely.
"That's my grandmother's seat."
The woman barely glanced up from her phone.
"I'm comfortable like this."
A flight attendant came over and gently asked her to make room.
Instead, the woman rolled her eyes.
"I paid for my ticket.
It's not my problem if she needs extra space."
My jaw tightened.
Grandma was tiny, but arthritis made it difficult for her to twist or squeeze herself into uncomfortable positions.
"There's barely enough room for her," I said.
The woman finally looked Grandma up and down.
"Then maybe people her age shouldn't be traveling."
I couldn't believe what I'd heard.
But Grandma gently caught my hand.
"Please, honey," she whispered.
"Don't let one rude person ruin our first vacation."
So I helped her sit down.
I hated leaving her like that.
But the plane was completely full, and the flight attendant promised to keep an eye on her.
I reluctantly walked back to my seat.
About five minutes after takeoff, I suddenly heard Grandma's voice.
"Ma'am…
excuse me."
No response.
"Ma'am…
please, look down."
"How dare you?
Leave me alone!" the woman snapped.
"You really need to look," Grandma said firmly.

The next second, Grandma turned around, caught my eye, and WINKED.
What happened next made the woman turn absolutely red.
