Chapter 2: The Letter in the Box

The box contained a printed letter.
Not from me.
From the cafe manager.
The woman's face went from shock to fury in about two seconds.
"What is THIS?" she snapped, snatching the paper off the table.
I watched her eyes move across the page.
The color drained from her cheeks.
The letter was simple.
It stated that she was no longer welcome at the cafe, effective immediately, and that her behavior had been recorded on the security camera above table four.
She slammed it down.
"You can't do this.
Do you know who I am?"
"I do now," I said quietly.
She turned to Ariella, who was standing a few feet away, still holding her order pad.
"This is YOUR fault," she hissed.
"You little—"
"Ma'am." The manager stepped forward.
"I'm going to have to ask you to leave."
The whole cafe had gone silent.
Every table was watching.
Then the woman's phone buzzed on the table.
She glanced at the screen — and something shifted in her expression.
Not anger this time.
Fear.
She grabbed her bag, stood up so fast her chair scraped the floor, and walked straight out without another word.
I looked at Ariella.
Her eyes were wet, but she was standing tall.
Then the manager leaned over and said something to me quietly that I was not expecting at all.
---
What did the manager say — and who was that message from?

What Ariella learned next brought her to tears.
