Chapter 1: The Girl Who Showed Up Anyway

A rude customer mocked my 15-year-old daughter's weight while she was serving her — but her smug smile vanished when I sat down at her table.
Almost a year ago, my 15-year-old daughter, Ariella, started having thyroid problems.
Our insurance covered only half the cost of her treatment, and after my husband's passing, I was already working double shifts.
So when summer came, Ariella got a part-time job as a waitress at a small local cafe.
I told her:
"Honey, you don't have to work.
It's summer.
Don't you want more time to relax and hang out with your friends?"
But Ariella hugged me and said she'd do everything she could to help me pay the bills.
One day, my younger daughter and I went to the cafe where Ariella worked.
We sat down at a table to have lunch.
But she was serving another table at the time.
Then I heard loud voices behind me.
I turned around and saw a woman who looked to be in her 40s, slim and nicely dressed, apparently arguing with Ariella.
The entire cafe could hear her.
"God, can't you bring me my food FASTER?" the woman said to Ariella.
Then she looked her up and down and continued:
"Although...
JUDGING BY THE WAY YOU LOOK, you're probably not very fast!"
Ariella hesitated and said:
"Uh...
ma'am, as soon as your meal is ready, I'll bring it right out.
Would you like to order anything else?"
The woman burst out laughing and said:
"SO YOU CAN EAT IT ON THE WAY OVER?"
Ariella had gained weight over the past year because of her thyroid problems, and she was very self-conscious about it.
I stood up, stepped over to the woman's table, and said:
"Ma'am, she has thyroid problems.
Could you please stop talking to my daughter like that?"
She raised her eyebrows and said:
"Well, that wouldn't have happened if you'd made her exercise and stopped her from eating donuts every night."
Oh, that was when I realized someone like her simply wasn't going to respond to politeness.
So I walked over to another server and asked them to bring SOMETHING special for that woman.
And it wasn't food or a drink.
I came back and sat down at HER TABLE so I could watch her reaction when THEY placed it in front of her.
They set a BOX in front of her, and when she opened it, she screamed.
Oh, and that was only the BEGINNING of this spectacular scene.
---
What was inside that box — and what did this woman do next?
