Chapter 2: The Folder on the Bed

Maya walked back into the house with Lily still pressed against her chest, both of them soaking wet.

She didn't say a word.

She went straight to the bedroom, dried Lily off, changed her clothes, and laid her gently on the bed.

Then she picked up her phone.

Her mother-in-law appeared in the doorway.

"You think you can call someone to help you?

You have no one.

You never did."

Maya looked up from the phone.

Calm.

Completely calm.

"I'm not calling anyone."

"Then what are you doing?"

"Sending an email."

The older woman laughed.

"To who?

Your mother?

Your little friends?"

Maya said nothing.

She pressed send.

Then she set the phone face-down on the dresser and started packing a bag.

That's when her mother-in-law noticed the folder on the bed.

Thick.

Tabbed.

Organized.

"What is that?"

Maya zipped the bag shut.

"Three years of records," she said quietly.

"Every incident.

Every date.

Every witness.

Every photo."

The older woman's smile didn't disappear all at once.

It faded — slowly — like she was only just beginning to understand.

"You wouldn't dare—"

"I already did," Maya said.

"The email went to my lawyer twenty seconds ago."

A phone rang from the kitchen.

It was her husband's ringtone.
