Chapter 2: The Box in the Closet

I held the key for a long moment, not sure what to say.
"What does it open?" I finally asked.
Raven wiped her eyes.
"She made me promise not to tell you that part.
She said you'd know when you saw it."
I didn't know.
I had no idea.
That night I walked through Mom's house room by room, trying every lock I could find.
The front door.
The old jewelry box on her dresser.
The filing cabinet in the spare room.
Nothing.
Then I noticed something I hadn't seen before — a small wooden box pushed to the very back of her closet shelf, half hidden behind a stack of folded blankets.
My hands were shaking as I lifted it down.
The key fit perfectly.
Inside was a bundle of letters tied with a ribbon, a photograph I had never seen, and a folded document with my name written on the front in Mom's handwriting.
I unfolded it slowly.
The first line stopped me cold.
*"There is something I should have told you years ago.
I was afraid.
I hope you can forgive me."*
I sat down on the floor of her closet and read every word.
By the time I finished, I understood why Mom had kept Raven a secret.
And I understood why she could never tell me herself.
