Chapter 1: The Key She Left Behind

A goth girl covered in piercings started visiting my 73-year-old mom every Saturday — after my mom's funeral, the girl handed me a key and said, "Your mom told me to give you this only after she was gone."

My mom, Doris, had always been a quiet, gentle woman who was happiest surrounded by the simple things she loved.

At seventy-three, she still lived in the house where I grew up, spent her mornings tending to her garden, and rarely went anywhere except the grocery store or her weekly book club.

I visited whenever I could and tried to spend at least one weekend afternoon with her each week so she wouldn't feel lonely.

That's why I was surprised when I stopped by one Saturday and found a girl I'd never seen before seated at Mom's kitchen table.

She couldn't have been older than twenty-five.

She wore all black, had several facial piercings, dark makeup, and tattoos covering both arms.

She and Mom looked like two people who had absolutely nothing in common, yet they were drinking tea and talking like old friends.

"This is Raven," Mom said casually.

"She's a friend."

I was curious about how they even knew each other, but Mom quickly changed the subject.

The following Saturday, Raven was there again.

Then she came back the week after that, and before long, her visits became part of Mom's routine.

What made it even stranger was that whenever I tried to join them, Mom always found some reason to send me away.

She'd suddenly remember something she needed from the store or ask me to run an errand, and by the time I returned, Raven was usually gone.

Whenever I asked what they talked about, Mom would only smile.

"Don't worry, sweetheart.

I just enjoy her company."

Mom seemed genuinely happy about those visits, so eventually I stopped questioning them.

Several months later, she suffered a sudden stroke and passed away shortly afterward.

Losing her devastated me, and the silence she left behind felt impossible to accept.

At the funeral, I noticed Raven standing quietly near the back.

After the service, she stepped toward me with tears in her eyes and placed a small, old-fashioned key in my hand.

I stared at it, confused.

"What is this?"

Raven gently closed my fingers around it and looked at me.

"Your mom told me to give you this only after she was gone."
