Chapter 7: Vivian's Last Move

The emergency custody hearing was set for Thursday morning.

On Wednesday evening, Vivian called Patricia Hale's office and requested a settlement meeting.

Patricia agreed to thirty minutes, in her boardroom, with both parties present.

Ethan sat on one side of the table.

Patricia sat beside him.

Vivian came in alone.

She had dressed carefully — understated, composed.

She sat down and folded her hands and looked at Ethan the way someone looks at a problem they have already solved.

"I want to propose something reasonable," she said.

"Joint custody.

I step back from the marriage quietly.

No public filing, no criminal referral, no press.

You keep the company clean.

Lily stays with you during the week.

I have weekends."

Patricia didn't move.

Ethan said, "No."

Vivian's composure held.

"Think about what a public case does to Lily.

She'll be questioned.

Interviewed.

Her name will be in documents.

Is that what you want for her?"

"I want her safe," Ethan said.

"That's what I've always wanted."

"She was never in danger."

"She was on the floor, Vivian."

"I made a mistake.

I was frustrated and I made a mistake.

I'm not a monster." Her voice shifted slightly — softer, more careful.

"I know I hurt her.

I know that.

But destroying everything won't undo it.

It'll only hurt her more."

"You were paid to marry me," Ethan said.

The room went quiet.

Vivian's hands stayed folded on the table.

But her knuckles were white.

"I don't know what you think you've found—"

"Twelve transfers.

Gerald Marsh to your account.

Starting eight months before Sandra Oakes introduced us." He didn't raise his voice.

"Marcus Teel is your father's nephew.

He was in my house because your father wanted someone watching the operation in person."

Vivian said nothing.

"The introduction was arranged.

The relationship was managed.

You were supposed to get access to my tender documents." He leaned forward slightly.

"Did you?"

She looked at him for a long moment.

"I never sent him anything," she said quietly.

"I want you to know that.

Whatever my father planned, I didn't give him your documents."

"Why not?"

Something crossed her face.

Not guilt exactly.

Something older and more complicated.

"Because somewhere in the middle of it, it stopped being a job." She looked down at her hands.

"I know you don't believe that.

I wouldn't either."

"It doesn't change what you did to Lily."

"No," she said.

"It doesn't."

Patricia spoke for the first time.

"My client is not interested in a private settlement.

The custody filing proceeds tomorrow as planned.

The referral to authorities regarding the corporate matter will be submitted simultaneously.

If you have information about your father's activities that you wish to provide voluntarily, that will be noted.

If not, the documentation we have will speak for itself."

Vivian looked at Patricia.

Then back at Ethan.

"My father will come after you," she said.

"Not me.

Him.

Directly.

You should know that."

"I know," Ethan said.

"He doesn't lose quietly."

"Neither do I."

She stood up.

She straightened her jacket.

She looked at him one last time, and for just a moment, the careful composure was completely gone.

"I'm sorry about Lily," she said.

"I mean that."

Then she walked out.

Patricia waited until the door closed.

"She didn't deny the payments," she said.

"No."

"That's useful." She made a note.

"Get some rest tonight.

Tomorrow is going to be long."

Ethan drove back to his mother's house in the dark.

Lily was already asleep.

Carol had left the hallway light on.

He stood in the doorway of the guest room and watched his daughter breathe.

She had her rabbit tucked under one arm.

Her face was completely still.

His phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Different from Rachel's.

*My daughter told me everything.

I'm Gerald Marsh.

We need to meet.

Just us.

Before the lawyers make this worse than it has to be.*

May you like

Ethan turned the screen off and put the phone in his pocket.

He sat down in the chair beside Lily's bed and stayed there until morning.
