Chapter 2: Someone in That Room Knew Everything

The principal's hand froze in mid-air.
She turned slowly.
The superintendent's face was stone.
Behind him, two school board members stood in the wings, arms crossed, watching every second.
"Step away from that podium," the superintendent said.
"Right now."
The principal's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
A parent near the front row stood up.
"We heard everything." Her voice shook with fury.
"Every word."
The murmur that swept through the auditorium was low and ugly.
The principal took one step back, then another, her eyes darting left and right for any exit, any escape.
There was none.
The valedictorian hadn't moved.
He still held his speech.
His hands were completely steady.
The superintendent turned to him and said quietly, "Son, the microphone is yours."
But before the boy could speak, a woman in the third row rose to her feet.
She was holding her phone up — screen facing outward.
On it was a text thread.
The name at the top of that thread was the principal's.
The message read: *"Make sure he doesn't get to that stage.
I don't care how you do it.
This has been planned for weeks."*
The auditorium went deadly silent.
Someone had known.
Someone had helped her.
And that person was still sitting in this room.
