Chapter 2: Why Only When I'm Already on the Floor

His eyes didn't soften.

They just went still.

"Don't," he said quietly.

"Don't make something up to save my feelings."

"I'm not." I took his hands in mine.

"Noah, I've been in love with you since we were seventeen.

Not because of the pact.

Before the pact even crossed my mind again."

He stared at me like I'd spoken in a language he didn't recognize.

"You never said anything."

"Neither did you."

A long silence.

Then, from the hallway outside the dressing room — my mother's voice, sharp and carrying.

"She's in there with him again.

Someone needs to stop this before it goes any further."

Noah's jaw tightened.

He pulled his hands back slowly.

"Maybe she's right," he said.

"Maybe I let myself believe what I wanted to believe."

"Noah—"

"I've watched you your whole life.

Every man you dated.

Every time you could have said something." His voice cracked.

"Why today?

Why only when I'm already on the floor?"

Before I could answer, the door pushed open behind me.

It wasn't my mother.

It was Noah's sister — and she was holding something I hadn't seen in over ten years.
