Chapter 2: The Last Page

I put Kevin on speaker.
Richard didn't move.
He just sat there with his hands folded, watching me hold the phone.
"Mom, are you listening?" Kevin's voice was tight.
"Dad changed the will.
He moved everything.
Do you even know what he did?"
"I know exactly what he did," I said.
Silence.
Then Melissa's voice came through in the background — she was there too, at Kevin's house, already talking about it.
"This isn't fair.
We never said anything wrong.
We were just being practical."
Richard leaned forward and tapped the document.
The last page showed two names I didn't recognize at first.
Then I remembered.
A phone call Richard had made three days ago.
A long conversation I hadn't asked about.
"Who are the Hendersons?" I asked quietly.
Richard looked at me with that same calm smile from the week before.
"A family shelter two towns over," he said.
"They've been waiting on a donation for eighteen months."
The phone was still on.
Kevin had heard every word.
"Dad." His voice had changed completely.
"Dad, you didn't."
Richard picked up the phone himself for the first time.
"We did," he said.

"And there's one more name on that page.
Turn to the back."
