Chapter 2: Three Words and a Opened Envelope

Part 2 ⬇️

The reply was three words.

*Handle it.

Tonight.*

Brooke read it twice.

Then she deleted the thread.

By 6 a.m.

she was dressed, composed, and seated at the dining table as though nothing had happened.

When Dominic walked in twenty minutes later — entering through the main door as if he'd just arrived from the airport — she stood and wrapped her arms around him.

"You're home early."

"Missed you," he said.

She smiled against his shoulder.

He didn't smile back.

Over breakfast, Brooke was warm, attentive, perfect.

She poured his coffee.

She asked about London.

She laughed at the right moments.

Dominic watched her the way a man watches something he's already decided about.

Then his phone buzzed.

He glanced at the screen and set it face-down.

Brooke noticed.

"Everything alright?"

"Just the attorney."

Her hand stilled on her cup for half a second.

"About the wedding contracts?"

"Something like that."

That afternoon, Emma passed the study and heard Dominic's voice through the closed door — low, careful, deliberate.

She caught only four words before his assistant pulled the door shut.

*…freeze the trust access…*

But it was the envelope on the hallway table that stopped her completely.

It was addressed to Natalie.

The return address was a law firm she didn't recognize.

And it had already been opened.
