Chapter 5: What Evelyn Remembered

Marcus drove Lily to Evelyn's house that evening.

Evelyn Marsh was seventy-one years old and had the kind of stillness that comes not from calm but from having survived things.

She had outlived her husband, outlived her daughter, and raised a granddaughter in her heart if not in her home.

She met them at the door before Marcus had finished parking, as if she had been watching for headlights.

Lily ran up the porch steps and into her arms without a word.

Evelyn held her, looked at Marcus over the top of Lily's head, and said nothing yet.

Inside, once Lily was settled in the back bedroom with a book and the small lamp that had been Hannah's, Evelyn made tea and sat across from Marcus at the kitchen table.

He told her everything.

She listened the way she always listened — completely still, hands around her mug, eyes on him.

When he finished, she was quiet for a moment.

"Julian Mercer," she said.

Marcus looked up.

"You know that name."

"Hannah mentioned him once.

About two years before she got sick." Evelyn set her mug down.

"He was a property attorney.

He approached her about the beach house — said he had a buyer, very motivated, very discreet.

She told him the house wasn't for sale and asked him not to contact her again."

"Did he?"

"I don't know.

She didn't mention him after that." Evelyn paused.

"But I always thought it was strange.

How did he know about the house?

It wasn't listed.

It wasn't advertised.

Hannah had never met the man."

Marcus felt something cold move through him.

"Someone told him about it."

"That's what I thought."

"Who knew about the house well enough to point an attorney at it?"

Evelyn looked at him steadily.

"Hannah had a close friend.

Before you.

A woman named Cara.

They had a falling out — I never knew exactly why.

Hannah wouldn't talk about it." She picked up her mug again.

"Cara's last name was Whitfield.

I don't know if that means anything."

Marcus pulled out his phone and typed the name.

The third result was a LinkedIn profile.

Cara Whitfield.

Real estate attorney.

Currently a partner at Mercer & Whitfield Property Law.

He turned the phone so Evelyn could see it.

She read it.

Set the phone down on the table between them.

Looked at it the way you look at something you already half-knew.

"Sarah didn't find Julian," Marcus said.

"Julian found Sarah."

Evelyn nodded slowly.

"Which means this started long before your marriage."

Lily's voice came from the back of the house — not frightened, just calling for her grandmother, the ordinary call of a child who wants company.

Evelyn stood up.

At the kitchen doorway she stopped and turned back.

"Marcus.

Hannah kept a box.

Personal papers, letters, things she wanted Lily to have someday.

It's in the top of my bedroom closet.

May you like

I haven't opened it since she passed." She paused.

"I think you should look through it tonight."
