Chapter 2: The Light in the Basement

I parked two houses down and walked the rest of the way in the dark.
The estate was quiet.
Most of the lights were off.
Then I saw it — a single light on in what I remembered as the basement.
I moved closer.
Through a narrow ground-level window, I could see Emily seated at a small table.
She wasn't alone.
Victoria stood over her, holding a stack of papers.
"Sign them," Victoria said.
"Tonight."
"I don't understand what I'm signing," Emily whispered.
"You don't need to understand.
You need to do what this family tells you."
Emily's hands were shaking.
I pressed my phone against the glass and hit record.
That was when Richard walked in and dropped a thick envelope on the table.
"Everything Emily owns goes back into the family trust," he said.
"She signs, or she loses the allowance.
All of it."
Emily looked up — and that's when she saw me through the window.
She didn't react.
She just looked back down at the papers.
And slowly, with a trembling hand, she picked up the pen.
I had maybe sixty seconds before someone noticed me outside.
But I already had what I needed.
What I didn't expect was the second document underneath — the one with Daniel's signature already on it.
