Chapter 2: The Blue Flash Drive

My hands began to shake as I read the next line.
Your father has been moving my money for years.
Your mother and Chloe knew.
Trust no one—not even Raymond Vance.
I stared at the papers.
One canceled check had been written to Raymond for $50,000, just three days before Grandfather signed the will.
Then I heard a key turn in the front door.
My family had returned early.
“Why is the portrait on the floor?” my father demanded.
Chloe spotted the open safe.
“What did you take?”
“Why are you worried?” I asked.
“You said Grandfather left me nothing valuable.”
My mother’s face went pale.
“Genevieve, give us the letter.”
I slipped the flash drives into my pocket.
“How did you know there was a letter?”
No one answered.
My father stepped closer.
“This is my house now.
Hand everything over.”
“The deed in this safe says otherwise.”
His confident smile vanished.
Then his eyes dropped to my pocket.
“Give me the blue flash drive,” he said.
I froze.
The three drives had never left the safe before tonight—and I had never told him what color they were.
