Chapter 2: The Name in the Dark

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

I sat on the floor of Grandfather's living room, the letter spread across my knees, and read every word twice.

Then a third time.

He hadn't just suspected them.

He had documented everything.

For years, my father had been forging Grandfather's signature — on property transfers, on account withdrawals, on documents that quietly moved wealth out of Grandfather's name and into shell companies my father controlled.

My mother knew.

The dates on the canceled checks proved it.

And Chloe?

She had signed two of them herself.

I was still holding the letter when I heard the front door open.

My father's voice filled the hallway.

"I knew she'd come back tonight."

He stepped into the living room and stopped when he saw the safe hanging open behind me.

The color left his face.

"Genevieve." His voice dropped low.

"Put that down.

You don't understand what you're looking at."

"I understand exactly what I'm looking at," I said.

"I do this for a living, Dad."

He took one step forward.

Then his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen — and something shifted in his expression.

Not anger.

Fear.

He turned away and answered in a whisper.

The only word I caught was a name.

A name that wasn't in any of Grandfather's documents.

A name that didn't belong to anyone in our family.

What Genevieve found on those three flash drives exposed a secret far bigger than any of them imagined.
