Chapter 2: What the Room Remembered

Part 2 ⬇️
Adrian was already moving toward the east wing before anyone spoke.
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
"Don't."
He stopped.
"Don't?" he repeated.
"You don't know what's in there."
"But you do."
Her hand dropped.
Adrian walked.
The hallway to the east wing felt longer than he remembered.
The lights were dim.
The blue door stood at the far end, slightly open, a thin line of pale light spilling across the floor.
Elena followed with Lily pressed against her side.
Adrian pushed the door open.
The room was exactly as his mother had left it.
Bookshelves.
A reading chair.
A small writing desk near the window.
But the desk had been disturbed.
A drawer was open.
Inside was a manila envelope.
Old.
The seal had been broken recently.
Adrian picked it up.
His name was written on the front.
Not typed.
Handwritten.
In his mother's handwriting.
"Adrian."
He turned.
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
Her expression had changed.
The coldness was gone.
What replaced it was something closer to fear.
"That envelope was meant to be destroyed," she said quietly.
"By who?"
She didn't answer.
Lily tugged Elena's sleeve and whispered, "That's her.
That's the lady."
Everyone turned.
Lily was pointing at the photograph on the wall above the desk.
Adrian had never seen it before.
The woman in the photo was holding a newborn.
She was smiling directly at the camera.
And standing beside her was a younger version of Elena.
