Chapter 2: The Call He Wasn't Supposed to Hear

My lawyer picked up on the second ring.
"Attorney Reyes.
I need to move everything.
Tonight."
He didn't ask unnecessary questions.
He had known me for eleven years.
By midnight, the transfer documents were ready.
By two in the morning, the house listing was live.
By four, I had signed everything that needed signing.
Then I sat in the kitchen and waited.
Ricardo came home just before seven.
He walked in smiling, still carrying that hospital smell, still wearing the same shirt from the day before.
"You should have called me," he said.
"I would have driven you home."
I looked at him and said nothing.
He went to the bedroom.
I heard him open the closet, heard the drawer slide, heard the silence that followed.
Then his footsteps came fast.
"Mariana.
Where is the account book?"
"Which one?"
"Don't play games with me.
The savings.
The 7 million."
I set my coffee cup down slowly.
"I moved it."
His face changed completely.
"You moved it WHERE?"
Before I could answer, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
Something shifted in his expression — not anger.
Fear.
He stepped into the hallway and lowered his voice, but I still heard four words clearly.
*"She already knows everything."*
He wasn't talking to the bank.
He was talking to his mother.
