Chapter 2: The Other Daddy

Jessi didn't see me.
She walked straight to Daniel.
No hesitation.
No looking around.
He said something low.
She shook her head.
Then she pressed both hands flat against his chest — not pushing him away.
Holding on.
Wendy watched them with an expression I had never seen on her face before.
Relief.
My daughter stood between them, still wearing her pink coat, looking up at the three adults like this was completely normal.
Like this was something she had seen before.
Many times before.
I got out of the car.
Jessi heard my footsteps first.
She turned.
The color left her face.
"Nathan—"
"Don't."
Daniel stepped forward.
"This isn't what—"
"Don't." I kept my eyes on Jessi.
"How long?"
She didn't answer.
"How long has he been alive?"
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Wendy moved in front of Fiona.
That single movement told me everything.
She wasn't protecting my daughter from a stranger.
She was protecting her from me finding out.
"Jessi." My voice was quieter than I expected.
"Is Fiona mine?"
The silence that followed was the longest of my life.
Then Fiona tugged Daniel's sleeve and asked in a small, confused voice:
"Daddy, why is my other daddy crying?"
